Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, and newborn patients.  Performs physical exams, collect and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.  The CNM practice includes care to uncomplicated gynecological patients as well as to obstetrical patients and their newborns during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in the hospital setting.. Functions independently, but in collaboration with the attending physician and interdisciplinary healthcare team, to provide midwifery services to patients.  Self-directed, responsible and accountable for clinical practice.  Provides continuity, compassionate, culturally sensitive care to patients.  Interests and responsibilities extend to the community level where they strive to improve maternal/child health from a patient-centered/family-centered approach.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Perform care to uncomplicated gynecological patients as well as to obstetrical patients and their newborns during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in the hospital setting.
  • Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
  • Document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  • Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family and staff.
  • Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
  • Document patient preparation and response to procedures.
  • Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care as defined by the nurse midwifery service.
  • Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document medical records.
  • Utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Board of Medicine for Midwives.
  • Document all prescriptions in patient’s medical record.
  • Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions.
  • Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
  • Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research as deemed appropriate by supervising physician.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in the on-call responsibilities for this position as required. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse licensure
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Midwife licensure
  • Minimum one year experience as a certified nurse midwife.
  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) highly preferred.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Creative Thinking: The following level of ability that is essential for the jobholder to think (in order to solve a problem) by combining two or more elements from past experience or imaginative thought.  

  • The position requires much autonomy of thought and problem solving.  The individual must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems.  The individual must be able to think abstractly, which is manifested in the ability to form concepts, use categories, generalize from single instances, apply procedural rules and general principles, and be aware of subtle or intrinsic aspects of a problem.  The development of hypothesis and potential solutions to problems involves careful interpretation, analysis and diagnosis.  The individual must be able to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  The individual must be able to think creatively with a degree of inventiveness, experimentation and intuition.  They must be able to deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables.
